Black and White Frame

This tutorial was written using PSP7, but can probably be done in earlier versions with a few adjustments.

** Remember to save your work often! **

1. Open the image you wish to frame.  If you would like to use this one, right click and save it to your computer.  Also open the silver fill and minimize.

2. Set your background color to Black and your foreground to texture .  Select the silver fill (scale 100% - angle 0).

3. Go to Image - Add - Borders.  Make sure Symmetric is checked and 3 is in all of the boxes.  Click OK.

4. Using your magic wand with these settings

Match Mode RGB Value
Tolerance 0
Feather 0
Sample Unmerged Unchecked

5. Click on the new border.  Go to Selections - Invert; then Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout with these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 65
Blur 20
Vertical and Horizontal 2.

6. Repeat the Cutout changing the Vertical and Horizontal to -2.  Selections - Select None.

7. Reverse your foreground and background colors by clicking the arrow indicated below (it doesn't matter what color your background is now, as long as it is not black).

8. Add a new border of 3.   Select the border with your Magic Wand and flood fill the border with the silver fill.  Keep selected and go to Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel with these settings:

9. Selections - Select None.  Reverse your colors again so that black is the background color.  Add a new black border of 3.

10. Reverse your colors again and add a new border of 3.  Select with the Magic Wand and fill with the silver fill and add the same Inner Bevel.  Selections - Select None.

11. Reverse your colors again and add a black border of 3.

12. Reverse your colors one more time and add a border of 15.  Select and fill with the silver fill.  Invert the selection and go to Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow with these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 50
Blur 10
Vertical and Horizontal .

13. Repeat this Drop Shadow 3 more times.  Selections - Select None.

14. Reverse your colors (yes, again...) and add a black border of 3.

15. Reverse your colors for the last time.  Select and fill with the silver fill.  Add the same Inner Bevel and Selections - Select None.

** NOTE ** At this point, you can stop and save your image as it is, or go on to the next steps and add some decoration.

16. Click on your Paint Brush .  As shown below, click the paint brush on your Tool Options box, choose "custom" from the drop-down menu and browse to your brushes folder.  I am using "cornerbrushes3" but you can use any one that you like.  You will need to adjust the size of your brush, depending on the size of your image.   Mine is set to 150.  Also, on the second tab of your Tool Options box, check the box beside "show brush outlines" so you will be able to see where you are placing your brush.

17. Add a new layer.  You should have the silver fill as your foreground.  Place your brush where you want it, hold your mouse very still and click 3 or 4 times until it is as dark as you want it.  Add a Drop Shadow using the same settings as before.

18. Now go to Layers - Duplicate.  Go to Image - Mirror, then Image - Flip.  This should place the corner in the opposite bottom corner.  If it is not lined up correctly, use your Mover Tool to adjust it.

19. Go to Layers - Merge - Merge All (Flatten) and you're finished.
