Country Plaque

This tutorial was written using PSP7, but can probably be done in earlier versions with a few adjustments.

** Remember to save your work often! **

1. Open a transparent image 300 x 400.  Set your foreground to #BD9C6F.  Decide on a tube that you will be using to decorate the heart and choose a medium-dark color from that as your background color.

2. Add a new Raster Layer (all layers will be Raster layers) and name it "top".  Load the "jd-top" selection (Selections - Load from Disk).  Flood fill with your foreground color.  Keep selected and change your foreground color to #A6814C.  On your Textures pallette (see below), click on the top rectangle and choose Woodgrain from the drop-down list.  Fill your selection.  Keep selected.

3. Add a new layer.  Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout and use these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 45
Blur 10
Vertical and Horizontal 2.

Keep selected.

4. Add another layer and repeat the Cutout, changing the Vertical and Horizontal to -2.  Selections - Select None.

5. Hide Layer 1 by clicking the little glasses on that layer of your Layer Pallette.  Click on one of the other layers and go to Layers - Merge - Merge Visible the top and both cutout layers.

6. Add a new layer and name it "heart".  Load the "jd-heart" selection and fill with your background color.  Keep selected and go to Selections - Float.  Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout and use these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 45
Blur 10
Horizontal and Vertical 0.

Keep selected.

7. Go to Selections - Modify - Contract by 5.  Change your foreground back to #BD9C6F.  On your Textures Pallette, click the arrow as shown below to make the foreground texture null:

8. Fill your selection with your foreground color.  Change your foreground color back to #A6814C (last time, I promise :-).  Click the arrow on your Textures Pallette again to put the woodgrain on top and fill your selection.  We are finished with the texture so you can make them both null.

9. Go to Selections - Float.  Add a Cutout with the last settings we used.  Selections - Select None.  Hide Layer 1 and Merge the top and heart layers Visible.

10. Add a new layer (don't worry about naming this one).  Go to Layers - Arrange - Move Down.  Open the chain that was included in the zip file and Edit - Copy.  Then on your plaque image, Edit - Paste as New Selection.  Move it to the left and position it as shown below.  Selections - Select None.  Go to Layers - Duplicate; then Image - Mirror.

11. Hide Layer 1 and Merge the others Visible.

** At this point, you can add your own text, or follow the next step **

12. Add a new layer and name it "text".  Load the "jd-letters" selection and fill with your background color.  Keep selected.  Selections - Float.  Add a Cutout with these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 100
Blur 3
Vertical and Horizontal 1.

13. Add a Drop Shadow with these settings:

Color White
Opacity 100
Blur 1
Vertical and Horizontal 1.

Selections - Select None.

14. Add a new layer.  Copy and paste your tube as a New Selection onto this layer.  If it is too large, go to Image - Resize.  Once you have it the correct size, go to Image - Sharpen - Sharpen.  Keep selected.

15. Add a new layer and add a Cutout with these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 55
Blur 3
Vertical and Horizontal 1.

Selections - Select None.

16. Merge all layers visible and your plaque can now be saved in psp format or exported as a tube (File - Export - Picture Tube).
