Mail Slot
This tutorial was written using PSP7, but can probably be done in earlier versions with a few adjustments.
** Remember to save your work often! **
** Attention Photo Impact Users ** Lisa has written a tutorial for this mailslot using PI (and done a fantastic job of it). If you would like to try her tutorial, you can find it HERE.
1. Open a transparent image 400 x 300. Add a new Raster Layer (all layers will be Raster layers). With your Selection Tool set to Rectangle, antialias checked, draw a rectangle from coordinates 50,50 to 300,200 .
2. Flood fill with color or pattern of your choice (I used #008080 and added a texture).
3. Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel and use these settings:
4. Selections - Select None. Add a new layer. Draw another rectangle from coordinates 70,70 to 280,120 .
5. Flood fill with the same color or pattern as before. Add the same Inner Bevel. Selections - Select None. Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow and use these settings:
Color Black
Opacity 50
Blur 5
Horizontal and Vertical 0.
6. Add a new layer. Draw another rectangle from coordinates 70,145 to 280,175 . Fill with Black. Selections - Select None.
7. Add a new layer. Set your Background to Null and make your foreground color #808080. Using your Draw Tool set to Single Line, Width 1, Antialias checked, draw a line starting at coordinates 70,175 up to 85,160 . Draw another line from 265,160 down to 280,175 . Draw one more line from 85,160 across to 265,160 . This is what you should have now:
8. Hide Layer 1 by clicking the little glasses on that layer in your Layer Palette. Layers - Merge - Merge Visible. Add a Drop Shadow with these settings:
Color Black
Opacity 50
Blur 10
Horizontal and Vertical 0.
9. Add a new layer. Using your Text Tool add your text. This part is up to you; I used white and applied a gold Blade Pro preset. Once you have the text the way you want it, Selections - Select None and add the same Drop Shadow as in Step 8.
10. At this point, you can add a new layer and add a decorative font if you would like. Again, hide layer 1 and Merge Visible.
11. Time to add the postcards. I've left the ones in the zip file large enough for you to add some text. You will need to resize them to 50% of the original.
12. Once you have the cards ready, activate one of them and go to Edit - Copy. Activate you mailslot image and go to Paste - As New Layer. Go to Image - Rotate - 90 degrees Right (make sure "All Layers" is NOT checked). Move this card into place as shown:
13. Use your Selection Tool to select the top part of the card as shown below. Then hit Delete on your keyboard. Selections - Select None. Add the same Drop Shadow that we last used on the mail slot.
14. Repeat steps 12 and 13, but this time Rotate the card 45 degrees Right. Hide layer 1 and Merge Visible.
15. Activate layer 1 and fill with your background color or pattern. Layers - Merge - Merge All (Flatten) and your finished.
