Three Layer Frame

This tutorial was written using PSP7, but can probably be done in earlier versions with a few adjustments.

** Remember to save your work often! **

1. Open the image you wish to frame.  I am using an image called "Antique Roses" by Paula Vaughn.  I'm very proud to say that Ms. Vaughn has given me permission to use her works in my tutorials.  To see more of her beautiful work, visit her website HERE.

2. Open a new transparent image.  The size depends on the image you are using; I usually make mine around 100px larger in height and width than the image I am framing so that when I add the image, too much of it doesn't get hidden behind the frame.  Add 3 new Raster Layers (don't worry about giving them a name).  Your Layer Palette should look like this:

3. Using the eyedropper tool , choose a light color from your image.

4. Click on Layer 1 in the Layer Palette.  Flood fill with the color you have chosen.  If you would like to add a texture, do so now.

5. Click on Layer 2 and repeat step 4 using a darker color from your image.  If you would like to add a texture, do so now.

6. Click on Layer 3 and repeat step 4 using an even darker color.  If you would like to add a texture, do so now.

7. While Layer 3 is still active, go to Selections - Select All.  Now go to Selections - Modify - Contract by 20.  Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow and use these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 75
Blur 2
Horizontal and Vertical 1.

8. Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout and use these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 100
Blur 6
Horizontal and Vertical 3.

9. Selections - Select None.  Your image should look similar to the one below.  (I have resized mine for the tutorial).

10. Click on Layer 2 and repeat step 7 only this time Contract by 40.  Your image will now look like this:

11. Click on Layer 1 and repeat step 7 only this time Contract by 60.  Your image will now look like this:

12. Click on the image you will be framing.  Go to Edit - Copy.  Now click on your frame, click on the Background Layer and go to Edit - Paste as New Layer.  You may need to move the image a little to center it like you want it.

13. Click on Layer 3 and go to Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel.  These are the setting that I used, but you may find something you like better:

14. Go to Layers - Merge - Merge All (Flatten).  Resize and save as a jpg.
